Meat and World Hunger
Go Vegan, Feed the World
Most people understand that using 16 pounds of grain and more than 5,000 gallons of water to produce a single pound of meat is vastly inefficient. But some people remain skeptical about whether their own dietary choices really affect world hunger.
While an end to animal agriculture does not guarantee that all available grain would simply be given to the world's hungry, it's important to recognize that widespread vegetarianism is a precondition to any viable famine-relief program. Unless we stop wasting food, water, and other resources by producing meat, dairy products, and eggs, there simply will not be enough food to go around.
Adopting a meat-free diet is easier than you might think. To start, think of how you can replace the meat and animal products in a few of your favorite dishes with vegan products. It's easy to switch to delicious substitutes like Boca burgers, soy sausage, Tofurky, soy milk, soy cheese, and others. Before long, you will be enjoying all your favorite foods, with all the taste and texture of meat and animal products, but without the cholesterol, saturated fat, or wastefulness that come with animal-derived foods. Check out our new vegetarian cooking Web site, VegCooking.com for tasty recipes and helpful tips on making the transition to a meatless diet. You can also request a free vegetarian starter kit packed with info and advice.
