Dead PigsThe filthy conditions in factory farms lead to rampant disease. Pigs spend their lives on concrete floors or on slatted platforms suspended over enormous manure pits that emit toxic gases and cause respiratory and skin problems—by the time they arrive at the slaughterhouse, one-quarter of pigs are suffering from agonizing mange and three-quarters have pneumonia. Those who die before they're large enough for slaughter are often left to rot on the factory farm floor, like the dead pig in this picture. |
