FeedlotsWhen they are about 1 year old, cows are shipped first to an auction lot and then across hundreds of miles to massive feedlotsfeces- and mud-filled holding pens where they are crammed together by the thousands. Feedlot owners have found that they can maximize profits by giving each steer less than 20 square feet of living spacethe equivalent of putting a dozen half-ton steers in a typical American bedroom! They are dosed with drugs to make them grow faster and to keep them alive in these miserable conditions. Instead of taking the sick cattle to see a veterinarian, feedlot owners will often give them even higher doses of human-grade antibiotics in an attempt to keep them alive long enough to make it to the slaughterhouse. |
