Burger King responded to PETA's campaign

BURGER KING CORPORATION STATEMENT

Animal Well-Being

Miami, FL -- January 9, 2001 - Burger King Corporation takes the issues of food safety and animal welfare very seriously, and we expect our suppliers to comply with the Federal Humane Slaughter Act during the production process.

In addition, Burger King Corporation is looking to endorse the industry guidelines, such as the UEP and AMI guidelines, that will more clearly define the humane treatment of animals with respect to production in the beef, pork, poultry, and egg industries. We are in the process of reviewing these guidelines with our suppliers. We have just begun to educate ourselves on the issue of farms that confine sows to stalls.

We are currently forming an advisory council on animal well-being that will include experts in this field. We also plan to put in place the necessary processes to assess industry adherence to these guidelines.

We have asked an expert in the field to assist us in developing a training program for auditing animal well-being by both our Quality Assurance Managers and independent auditing agents.
