Health Concerns // Obesity and Weight Loss // Vegan Weight-Loss Success Stories

Mike

As a personal trainer, I thought I knew just about everything about dieting and eating healthy. I had tried all the popular fad diets, but they all failed to deliver. I had heard about vegan diets, but I had never seriously considered it. Then, at about the same time that I was getting into competitive bodybuilding, I started hearing more about how vegan diets help you to lose fat and maximize muscle. My buddies at the gym talked about veganism, but none of them was keen on actually trying it.

I started doing online research, but I just couldn’t see myself actually doing it—after all, I’m a Navy man: How could I not eat meat? Then a friend gave me a “Meet Your Meat” DVD. After seeing the cruelty that animals raised for food endure, I couldn’t continue eating meat. That was the motivation I needed, and I gave up meat, eggs, and dairy products. Soon afterwards, I started losing weight, and I found that it stayed off. I have a very full schedule, and my vegan diet gave me all the energy I needed to get through the day and then some! I never felt deprived, and I was exposed to a wide variety of new and delicious foods.

Plus, I now participate in bodybuilding competitions and recently took second place in a local contest. After going vegan, I also finally had the energy to start training for endurance events—something I had always wanted to do but didn’t feel up to when I still ate animal products. I recently competed in both a triathlon and a half-marathon, and I finished both well beyond my goals. Going vegan has been the best choice I could have ever made—for my health, for the environment, and especially for animals.
