PETA's Letter to McDonald's CEO Jack Greenberg Announcing the Moratorium

Dear Mr. Greenberg:

As our one-year campaign moratorium comes to a close, I'd like to thank McDonald's for continued improvements in animal welfare and to let you know that we will continue our campaign moratorium for another year.

We now see the enormous impact McDonald's changes of a year ago have had on the entire industry. Burger King and Wendy's have made major improvements; Tricon, the Food Management Institute, and the National Council of Chain Restaurants have formed animal welfare panels; and Senator Robert Byrd has spoken eloquently from the Senate floor about farmed animal abuse, among other developments. McDonald's animal welfare requirements have been the catalyst for these and many other improvements in animal welfare.

It may or may not interest you to know that we have been under a lot of pressure from other animal rights activists because of the position we have taken, but we are prepared to endure that in order to achieve what we feel is right.

One matter remains unresolved at the moment. We are extremely disappointed that McDonald's has not yet addressed animal abuse outside the U.S., the U.K., and Australia or the extreme abuse involved in its present chicken slaughter methods. These issues are of the utmost importance. If we do not hear back from you that changes are forthcoming, we will offer a shareholder resolution on these issues and will work with other McDonald's shareholders and through the media to see these changes implemented.

Should McDonald's announce plans for internationalization of its animal welfare standards, beginning with immediate plans for Canada, as well as plans to address chicken slaughter by immediately requiring 200 mAmps in slaughter baths and an intention to phase in gas-killing, we will cancel all campaign plans for the future.
