Chris and Shona Crowned Sexiest Vegetarians Next Door!

PETA received more than 1,000 entries from gorgeous vegetarians and vegans across North America for our annual Sexiest Vegetarian Next Door contest, and we asked visitors to GoVeg.com to help choose the winners. More than 75,000 of you logged on to vote. The final tally was close, but in the end, Shona and Chris came out on top. Thanks to Holiday Systems International, each will receive a free trip for two to Hawaii.

Name: Shona
Age: 21
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Shona, 21, is a Salt Lake City native who considers a sense of humor, open-mindedness, smiley faces, positive attitudes, motivation, and goal-oriented people to be turn-ons. Her lifelong close connection with companion animals recently made Shona realize how unnatural it is to eat any animals. Now she is vegetarian and couldn't be happier! Shona says she has never been healthier, her body is more toned, and she needs less sleep. She has even convinced many of her friends to try Boca burgers.

In her spare time, Shona likes modeling, dancing, music, traveling, and working out. She also plans to volunteer at the Utah Humane Society in the near future.

Name: Chris
Age: 29
Location: Panorama, BC, Canada

Chris, 29, was drafted into the NHL at the age of 19, but he later suffered an unfortunate injury. He says that going vegetarian around the same time as the injury has helped him recover and become a bigger, stronger, and faster athlete. Chris also says that thanks to his vegetarian diet, he rarely feels tired or sick, and he adds that "[k]nowing that I am saving animals' lives makes me feel more alive every day."

When he's not jetting off to Europe—where Chris now plays hockey for eight months out of the year—this Panorama resident enjoys sports, travel, and photography. Chris even finds time to protest circuses and help our small and large friends in need. Chris has been known to move several animals out of harm's way on busy streets, including one cow!

More than 1,000 sizzling vegetarians and vegans sent us their photos along with a number of great reasons why they went vegetarian. Here are the top two reasons that contestants gave:

  • They didn't want to support cruelty to animals.
This was by far the number one reason contestants gave for going vegetarian. They didn't want to support mutilation without painkillers; confinement in filthy, crowded conditions; and violent slaughter—all of which are inflicted on chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cows every day in factory farms. Many also mentioned their disgust at the abuse of fish on parasite-ridden fish farms or the suffering caused when fish are suffocated or cut open alive on the decks of fishing boats.
  • They wanted to be healthier.
Many entrants said that they were encouraged to make the switch by the fact that vegetarians have significantly lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, and various types of cancer than meat-eaters. Others told us that the healthy vegan diet promoted in the bestselling book Skinny Bitch convinced them to make the switch.
