Mohini, whose name means “enchantress” in Hindi, began
gymnastics when she was just 4 years old. Since then, she has led
the American team to the gold medal at the Pacific Alliance Championship
in Malaysia, capturing the All-Around Title and earning medals in
each of the four event finals. She also represented the U.S. in
two World Championships and competed in the apparatus final on vault
twice. And now, this Philadelphia-born vegetarian is training in
L.A. for the final Olympic tryouts in July. When the Olympic torch
returns to Greece this summer for the 2004 games, Mohini Bhardwaj
plans to be there.
Mohini Bhardwaj had high hopes going into the 2002 U.S. Championships,
but unfortunately, a dislocated elbow on her first event set her
back for a while. But “Mo” wasn’t so easily dismounted.
Less than a year later, she entered the gym again and now hopes
to make a run at the 2004 Olympic team. It hasn’t been easy
going for this 11-time collegiate All-American, who worked three
jobs last summer and has been juggling her college career with her
gymnastics training for the last year.
With
the endurance and strength provided by her vegetarian diet, along
with support from her friend Pam Anderson, Mohini is sure to go
all the way. Pam recently donated $20,000 to Mohini’s cause,
which will allow Mo to devote all her time to training for the Olympics.
Former Baywatch bombshell, voice of the titular character
on the hit TV show Stripperella, and dedicated animal rights
activist Pamela Anderson hopes to encourage more athletes to adopt
a compassionate and healthy vegetarian diet. In her eyes, everyone
who chooses to go vegetarian deserves a gold medal.
