Alexis Stewart Narrates PETA Veggie Holiday Hotline

It may come as no surprise that Alexis Stewart knows a thing or two about holiday entertaining, but the daughter of domestic diva Martha Stewart differs from her mom when it comes to choosing the menu—she's a vegetarian.

An expert at helping hosts who wonder what to serve meat-free guests, Alexis stopped by PETA's New York City office recently to record PETA's 1-888-VEG-FOOD holiday hotline, offering free recipes and urging folks to remember the growing number of vegetarians this season by offering meatless dishes.

"Chances are, if you're hosting the holiday feast this year, you'll have at least one friend or family member who doesn't eat meat," says Alexis on the toll-free hotline. "Whether for ethical or health reasons, millions of Americans have gone vegetarian, and it's now easier than ever to keep veggie guests happy at holiday gatherings. To ensure your menu doesn't ruffle anybody's feathers, visit VegCooking.com for handy tips and tasty recipes. And for a free vegetarian starter kit, leave your name and address at the tone. Thanks, and happy holidays."

In an exclusive interview, Alexis told PETA that she's always been an outspoken animal advocate and has been a vegetarian for 20 years—since she was in high school—and that her mother was always supportive. Unlike many vegetarians, Alexis isn't fond of fake meats but prefers pasta, salads, and soup—especially carrot—which she made a pot of recently that lasted a week. Alexis also tells us that while she prefers to eat at home, some of her favorite restaurants in New York City are Matsuri, where she gets vegetarian sushi, and the new vegan eatery Pure Food & Wine, and she gets cravings for the tomato soup and avocado sandwiches at Pret a Manger.
